Audi Music Interface (AMI) – MP3 Devise, USB Port
April 10, 2009
What came first, the iPod or the MP3? When you talk about music and interface capabilities people think you have to have an iPod, and seem to forget that MP3 devices existed long before the iPod. Audi has an amazing interface with both the iPod and the iPhone but what about everyone else? What about people who don’t use Apple products? (Yet!) Audi has come out with a Music Interface for anyone who has an MP3 device and or cell phone with MP3 capabilities and a USB port. The nice thing about the Audi product over your conventional “in car kit” is that the Audi product will charge your MP3 device as well. So even though the MP3 and media playing devices existed long before the iPod & iPhone, Audi has caught up and now has interface technology that suits your MP3 device, whatever it may be.

Is this compatible with the A3?

I have a 2006 A6 with a CD changer, do I have to swap it out for the AMI? If so, is it as simple as that or are there other considerations?

I also have a 2006 A6 C6 with cd changer in the glove compartment, is it easy to swap it out and do i need the retro fit kit, or would the AMI be just fine?

this USB player is compatible with the panasonic BUS interface used on all VW Audi Seat vehicles (+ some ford galaxys with the Nav system) dating back to the late 90’s – its limitations are:
only 99 tracks per folder (CD red book standard)
and only 6 folders – selectable as the CDs on the 6 radio buttons as a CD changer would be used – (some radios support 10 disks i think?)
The rear connector is the standard VW CD changer cable connector – audi used a round din connector for some odd reason? not 100% sure an adapter loom is available from audi but it connects to the blue 8 pin plug on the rear of early radios and the 10 pin on later ones!

P.S. i have one running on a VW gamma V tape player from a ‘98 golf! – been running for 3 years now and only bugs are:
It sometimes goes back to radio at 1st key on (probably 1 in 100 starts)
It dont like all MP3 formats – 160kB/s itunes recorded its fine 100% and at high volume levels there is some alternator whine – this is caused by the radios poorly designed single ended audio inputs – probably fixable with some isolation transformers?
the unit is a single din size. it can run with a cd changer but only if the changer has the optional socket – not all do though!

Scott,
I have a HTC Touch Diamond phone with Sprint. It connects great with the bluetooth in the car but I cannot get the windows media player to play when connected to the AMI. It uses a mini USB cable which I have purchased at the local Audi franchise. Can you give me any help with this?

Can I retrofit the AMI kit into a 2006 A6 with Nav ? If yes, how much will it cost and where can I get the AMI kit ?

I have an ‘09 A4 and have the iPod MMI port and it works great. However, I have a Blackberry and want to be able to listen to Pandora streaming radio in the car. Will this USB interface do that for me or will it only allow MP3 playback? Can I remove the current iPod port and put this one in? I looks like it will fit in the same spot in the glove compartment.
Thanks!
