Audi Music Interface – Bluetooth Adapter
February 26, 2009
To make our lives even a little easier Audi has brought out their version of Bluetooth MP3 interface technology. This system works very nicely; if you have a Bluetooth compatable MP3 device, it will work for you. After you have updated the software on your MMI system with the provided flashdrive you can then attach the USB adapter and you are connected. Without ever having to physically connect your music device to your Audi, you can link the music right through your in vehicle audio system. This is a very cool innovation that is sure to add to your entertainment experience!

This is the USB stick with software for the Audi Music Interface and operating instructions for the Bluetooth adapter.

This is the USB adapter cable for the Audi Music Interface.

This is the Bluetooth adapter.

If I can answer any questions for you about the Bluetooth iPod Interface “Contact Me Here” and I will do my best to help you. Keep in mind I took these photographs in order to provide the best example of this technology and share what I see in the industry each day. I will continue to showcase original content in order to be your top source for Portland Oregon Audi. Thanks again for visiting www.iamaudi.com

great post. it seems that so long as you have a bluetooth signal you should be able to paid up with anything that is BT enabled.
at least it seems logical.

Mr. Diggles,
That is right; as long as you have the Bluetooth signal you should be able to connect them. However the iPhone will not pair right out of the box, so there are some exceptions to the rule.

Scott, is this compatible with an iphone 3g?
Just bought an 09 a4 turbo on Sat. The interface works great for my music, but i can stream other things off the phone and would love to listen to them too. This device seems to solve that problem.

Scott,
Thanks for sharing this info. I have a Q7 and was interested to know if this bluetooth adapter can work with my MMI. I was told my Audi America that I won’t be able to use my Ipod because my Q7 was manufactured before November 2006 when Audi did not include an ipod ready interface with my MMI.
Thanks in advance!

From Patrick on March 5th, 2009 at 6:28 pm
Patrick,
In order for the Blutooth MP3 adapter to work you have to have an iPod interface. Audi Of America is correct, you do not have the interface standared in your year Q7, however if you contact your Audi servoce department they may have a way to put an iPod port in your Q7.

I just got a 2009 A4 with the MMI/Nav package. Do you know if I can connect my MS Zune, 30GB MP3 player to the AMI? I haven’t been able to find the USB adapter online yet. I guess I have to go to the dealer, but I want to know if it will even work.

From willie on April 1st, 2009 at 8:08 am
Here it is on the Audi website. Looks like no telephony, just music with this adaptor. So hooking up an iPhone would let you stream music but not take phone calls?! Lame.

Hi, just got back from Audi Stockport UK where they got hold of the bluetooth adaptor for me to try out at my request. I connected my Touch Diamond (Windows mobile phone) through A2DP and streamed music and Tom Tom directions at the same time, as well as having my phone connected by bluetooth aswell. Surprisingly , I had to make seperate pairings for A2DP and HandsFree, but it worked ok. Maybe thats answers some other peoples questions – it can handle multiple bluetooth connections.
Only one small thing that I hope you can clarify Scott? It wouldnt let me pause/stop my music – it just restarted automatically every time after about a second – maybe it was a glitch, but I couldnt stay there testing in the showroom all day
. Would rather not have to disconnect my device just to stop the music?
From Gareth on April 6th, 2009 at 7:49 am
seems like your phone was connected to the UHV on the one sid, and to the BT dongle on the other side..
the dongle itself is not able to handle multiple connections..
pause/stop and next title/last title should work if the phone/player supports it

What is the best way to retrofit my 2005 A6 (I have NAV/BT Phone/Tech Package) with the Audi Music Interface and BT adapter? I don’t need the CD Changer…can I get rid of that and avoid the cost of the new glovebox? Is there an easier way?
I love my car…waiting for the next gen A6, but don’t want to wait that long for BT A2DP from my iPhone.
Your help is appreciated!!!

hi Scott, great website. Just so that I am getting this straight, I have a 2007 A6 with cd changer but no navigation. I have an Ipod Clasic and have seen that a blue tooth adapter is available for it. http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=Ipod+classic+bluetooth&cid=3111367551077385603&sa=title#p
Won’t this work with the bluetooth feature in the car like a regular bluetooth phone? Or is the Audi Music Interface [4E0 057 785B] (at $650.00) still needed?
From Dino on September 27th, 2009 at 8:07 am
Dino,
If you have the 6 disk C/D changer and not an iPod adapter you will not be able to stream music. In order to use your iPod with your A6 you will first need to have the iPod interface installed. Let me know if i can help you with anything.

Hello. This is a great website/blog. Thank you for maintaining it. I have a bit of a dilema. My 2010 R8 (with the new MMI navi interface) just arrived, only due to an ordering miscommunication, without the Audi Music Interface. I really wanted that, as I just bought an iPhone 3Gs and wanted to maximize its functionality and harmonization with the R8. I haven’t taken delivery yet. I suppose I gave several questions/concerns:
1. If I go with the current set up, what will I be UNABLE to do with my iPhone? In other words, what do I gain by adding AMI? What do I give up by not having it?
2. Is it possible to convert my current setup to AMI without changing out the head unit?
I’m sure I have more questions, only none come to mind right now.
Thank you for your input.

Great website and thanks for maintaining it. My post from last night must have been erased from the board, so I will post it again.
My 2010 R8 just arrived at the dealership, only due to an ordering miscommunication, without the Audi Music Interface. However, it is the newest verstion of the MMI/Navi Plus. But, this is disappointing, because I really wanted the AMI and just bought an iPhone 3Gs, wanting to maximize the functionality of both. I suppose I have several questions:
1. What do I gain, with respect to iPhone functionality, if I convert to AMI? What do I lose if I don’t?
2. To convert my current set up to AMI, is a swap out of the head unit necessary? If not, what is the cleanest way to make the conversion?
I really appreciate your input.

Morning,
Great site and hopefully with its help my nightmare with my dealer will end. I have a 2008 A5S. Few weeks ago I had my dealer install AMI module in order to link my iPhone 3GS, so I can stream music from my library (please note that I linked my phone through bluetooth with no problems but that only goes for calls). Even though module was installed my dealer is unable to run it stating that there is some sort of problem and most likely I am not gona be able to play music that way. Please advise because I am running out of options here.

can you help me ?

It is a good thing you don’t need your C/D player, you will have to have an iPod cable instlled and the C/Dchanger removed. Call your local Audi service department and they can give you a quote.

I have 2006 A6 with navigation and phone bluetooth integration. I am seeing that Audi’s web site saying that Bluetooth Streaming Audio requires “2G”. Is that a hardware or software, that in case if needed would be updated from the flash drive? Overall, would it work with my setup, and if so then where should this connector be hooked up? …CD changer i assume?

Hi Scott, you sold me a 2005 A4 in fall, 2008 (don’t know if you remember). One of my concerns at the time was being able to use my iphone through the stereo system. I have investigated car toys and all they seem to want to do is sell me a whole new stereo with a bunch of aftermarket gadgets to crap up my console. Does this AMI or MMI technology work to 1) allow me to use the iphone phone via the stereo and 2) play music from the iphone via the stereo? If so, where can I get it? Thanks!

Hello There, I have an Audi TT 2008 witn MMI ,iPod interface and telephone Bluetooth interface.
The existing interface will work with iPod models manufactured after Dec 2007. So the new iPods like iTouch and the late models simply will not play with 2008 Audi interface. Can I stream musc via bluetooth without causing interference with the other bluetooth adaptor for the telephone?
In any case, is there an Audi retrofit that would allow to use the iPod Touch to an MMI deployed with 2008 TT, R8 and other models?
From Hugo M. on January 11th, 2010 at 3:32 pm
Kevin,
Sorry you can’t download music directly from your iPod to the Audi Q5, Apple has prohibited this. You wil have to put the music on an SD card or flash drive and upload the music to the Jukebox this way. Now depending on if you have navigation or not depends on what size SD card you can use.
From Scott Mitchell on January 11th, 2010 at 4:29 pm

I have not found away to effectively stream music VIA bluetooth. Also I have not heard of anyone else not being able to use the new iPod devises with the nav Plus system in the TT, R8, and A3.

Now i use bluetooth to use my car speakers to talk and listen on a phone call, and even to listen to my voicemail. But when I use the ipod on the same iphone device, i can’t get the music to play over the speakers or even give me the option to use my connected bluetooth deveice (the car.) Would love to do this without cables…could it be that the A6 i have does not support streaming audio (A2DP?) even tho i can play back voicemail? great site…thanks again.
From vernon on January 18th, 2010 at 12:21 pm
vernon,
Thanks! I appreciate the good words. If you have the factory iPod adapter installed from your local Audi dealer then you will be able to go wireless. You will be able to leave the bluetooth adapter in your glove box, your cell phone in your pocket and stream music through the speakers of your A6, pretty slick. Thanks for following I Am Audi!

I have a 2010 Q5 with the MMI 3G with Nav. Is there any news on when Audi will offer an A2DP bluetooth dongle that will work with iPhone 3G?
I currently use a Sony A2DP speaker sitting in the back seat but it’s a compromise that is getting old (plugging the iPhone into the connector in the glovebox got old the first week).
From David on January 29th, 2010 at 11:28 am
I have a 2010 A4 and am using the bluetooth adapter pictured above and am having the following issues with it when connecting with my iPhone 3Gs.
1. When I get into my car and have my phone with me, it automatically starts the iPod app on my phone but then I have to go into Settings > General > Bluetooth everytime I want it to connect to my car.
2. Don’t have song control thru the Audi interface on the dash (I don’t have nav)
3. When I have video’s (iTunes U lectures) the video and audio are out of sync … not a huge deal since I don’t watch them while I am driving but I noticed it.
Other than these issues, I have been able to stream all of the iPhone applications that I was hoping to including:
1. Pandora
2. Tom Tom GPS app
3. Orb
4. iPod
If anyone has any input on the items I mentioned above that would be great.
thx!

You can get a cable that does work with the Zune however it is not as slick as the iPod interface. Go you your Audi parts department let them know of your application and they can provide the proper cable. Good luck and thank you for contacting I Am Audi.

Scott,
I went to the dealership and bought the MMI USB cable and connected it with the USB cable that came with the Zune HD. The interface tries to recognize it but can’t. I have had it attempt to show the first album then it stops and gives a message that it couldn’t recognize it. Which cable were you thinking of and if you don’t mind, do you know the part number? I am wondering if it is a software issue? Please advise.

Hi Scott, really appreciate you taking the time to maintain this site — very helpful.
Can you confirm whether it’s possible to use the AMI bluetooth adapter and the iPod connector at the same time? My guess is that the bluetooth adapter plugs in to the same AMI port as the AMI iPod cable. It would be a tough choice for me to have to pick one.
Thanks,
