Audi Music Interface – Bluetooth Adapter

Feb 26

To make our lives even a little easier Audi has brought out their version of Bluetooth MP3 interface technology. This system works very nicely; if you have a Bluetooth compatable MP3 device, it will work for you. After you have updated the software on your MMI system with the provided flashdrive you can then attach the USB adapter and you are connected. Without ever having to physically connect your music device to your Audi, you can link the music right through your in vehicle audio system. This is a very cool innovation that is sure to add to your entertainment experience!

Hi Scott. Looking at buying a Q7 2008. Do all come with Navigation or just the top package? If not, Can you get it installed? What is ballpark on price?

I have a 2009 A4 with the MMI/Nav package. Do you know if I can connect my MS Zune HD, 32GB MP3 player to the AMI? I bought the USB adaptor for the MMI but the interface doesn’t recognize it. I want to know if it will even work because this is very disappointing.

  • http://www.iamaudi.com Scott Mitchell

    Rico,
You can get a cable that does work with the Zune however it is not as slick as the iPod interface. Go you your Audi parts department let them know of your application and they can provide the proper cable. Good luck and thank you for contacting I Am Audi.

    Scott,

I went to the dealership and bought the MMI USB cable and connected it with the USB cable that came with the Zune HD. The interface tries to recognize it but can’t. I have had it attempt to show the first album then it stops and gives a message that it couldn’t recognize it. Which cable were you thinking of and if you don’t mind, do you know the part number? I am wondering if it is a software issue? Please advise.

Hi Scott, really appreciate you taking the time to maintain this site — very helpful.

Can you confirm whether it’s possible to use the AMI bluetooth adapter and the iPod connector at the same time? My guess is that the bluetooth adapter plugs in to the same AMI port as the AMI iPod cable. It would be a tough choice for me to have to pick one.

    Thanks,
    Chris

    Scott,

Great site. I have a Q7 2007 3.6Pand 4.2P both 2007.I am planning to get this adapter for my Q’s but my question is “Will it show the songs that are playing on the MMI screen? Or is it just streaming music and give you the same control that a Blue Tooth hi def headset would give you i.e play, pause forward reverse and increase volume?” Your answer here would be very helpful

    Scott,
I’ve got an ’06 A6 with MMI/NAV. What are my options for playing my Itouch through the system and not using an FM modulator?
Please advise – I read through the previous posts and am not sure this question was asked. Is it possible through bluetooth as I may have updated MMI software due to a blank out earlier this year.
I appreciate the time and effort you put into this site for other Audi owners trying to get the most out of their vehicle.

I have a 2007 A6 with mmi, but NAV is not installed, what does this involve and how much does it cost? Obviously, I have the rack in the trunk and I have satellite radio so I have the receiver. Looks like I need a DVD like unit to plug in. is it more complicated than that?

I have 2010 Q5, iPhone 3GS, and I am using Bluetooth adapter through AMI. No problem with pairing and streaming, however there is one nuisance. If the Bluetooth connection was lost between the iPhone and Bluetooth adapter, say when I walk away from the car; when I get back and turn on the car the music automatically starts from where it was left (if Media was selected) but the sound comes from iPhone speakers instead of the sound system. Even though under iPhone settings the device still looks like connected, I have to connect again by tapping on the device name on the iPhone screen to get the sound back to car’s sound system. Any idea?

I’ve got a 2010 A4, doesn’t this car have a 3G MMI? I see a couple of posts claiming this Bluetooth adapter works with a 2010 model. The specs say 2G only, so I have refrained from purchasing one. Is it just that the software update dongle is for 2G because the 3G already has the update included? I have a Windows Mobile phone with A2DP that I would love to use to stream my music content to the MMI with. Will this adapter in fact work?
    Thank you,
    Matthew

I just bought a Audi A4 Avant 2010 Model. I got the Bluetooth and MMI iPod adapter. However, I also like to listen to online radio stations via the iPhone Apps. Both system don’t connect with the iPhone while playing music based on html or other music players (non MP3 format). Would this device solve the issue I have?

I just bought a 2010 Q5. The bluetooth pairs fine with my iphone 3G for the telephone interface. But I cannot get the AMI ipod adapter to recognize my iphone as a media option. It will charge the iphone though. The same adapter works with a standard ipod and an iphone 4. Any suggestions?

Scott, I just read all the posts here and see that you are indeed an expert on the bluetooth issues. I am a little confused on what I need to do. I have an 06 A6 with the tech. package (MMI, bluetooth phone, Nav., CD changer in the glove box, etc.) and the premium package with Bose stereo. My guess is that the car does not support A2DP from the factory. I would like to play music from my cell phone and/or (Ipod with bluetooth transmitter attached) through the car stereo via bluetooth without losing my CD changer. Can you plese explain exactly what I need to do to make this work cost effectively. Thanks

    Hey scott,
I just bought a used 2007 Audi A6 and love it but I want to connect my itouch to it. It has navigation and the 6 disc cd changer. My touch is Bluetooth wireless. Is this item the only thing I need to buy?

Like the above post, I have a 2007 Audi Q7 4.2 with the tech package and nav. However, AMI wasn’t available when I purchased my vehicle so the ipod connection wasn’t an option. Was thinking about getting the AMI retrofit kit to add ipod but slightly confused as to whether I can skip that and go down this route with the bluetooth streaming audio. My guess not since it still needs to be connected to AMI but wanted to confirm. If I had AMI, I could just plug it in, so why would I need bluetooth streaming?

    HI Scott,

I have a AUDI Q7 2007, Can I use the ‘iPod Cable for AMI
Item Number: 4F0051510E’ or ‘MP3 Cable for AMI
Item Number: 4F0051510C’ and directly play music (MP3 or itunes)? Or do I need to have other software updates? Also, with the iPod cable for AMI I believe the playlist would reflect in the MMI screen, is it correct? Any ball park amount for installing this through a dealer? Thanks for your patience & you are doing a great job by keeping this blog.

PS: Audi USB memory key, Item Number: 8R0063827C – Do we know the use of this?

    Hey Scott,
Thanks for the information. I have a couple questions though. I just got a 2007 A4, and I was wondering if this product would mean I could connect an iPod Touch (it has bluetooth) and a phone with BT, and how I would could know if my car would support this. Thank you

I own a US model 2007 A6 S line with MMI and Nav and CD changer no Ipod Dock. Considering this is a bluetooth devise can it be installed in the trunk keeping the CD changer in tact? Is this a do it yourself project or is the dealer required? Also my phone is already connected via the existing blutooth connection will this remain intact and an additional pairing to the new device? Sorry if it is covered in a previous thread but not getting the clearest of pictures from these postings.

    Thank You,

Excellent info…I am in the same boat as the previous A6 S comment. I have a 2008 A6 with MMI 2G and the CD changer. Does this device get installed in the trunk or would I have to loose the CD changer functionality? I would like to keep it if at all possible and add the Bluetooth streaming for Pandora etc.

Also, is it an easy install? Are there any guides out there?
    Thanks

    Scott,

This is a great article and I would love to integate this into my 2007 A4 with Navigation. My only question is will this setup work with the RNS-E Navigation unit which is what was installed in the B7 body A4′s? If it is not compatible do you know of any other simiar options? I have an iphone 4 with the charging cradle so I would prefer a setup similar to what is in this article, that way I can use the external antenna, charge my phone and stream music. Any help would be much appreciated.

GREAT SITE!! Just picked up a 2011 S4 in NJ and the bluetooth adapter. I plug in the usb stick for the software update and nothing happens. I’ve already tried a second stick and have downloaded software from http://www.audi.de. It appears the MMI system doesn’t recognize the *.BIN file on the stick. Does the 2011 S4 MMI use a different format? Do you know of any newer updates than the 2008 update on this site?

  • http://www.iamaudi.com Scott Mitchell

The Blutooth streaming adapter does not work in the 3G MMI vehicles like your new Audi S4. Let the Parts department know your application and they should take the adapter back.
