Audi Q5 Tow Hitch Installation – Audi Certified Service

Aug 14

As you all know the genuine Audi tow hitch is now available from your local Audi dealer. However I have had alot of requests for publication of the O.E.M (Original Equiptment Manufacturer) hitch installed. Genuine parts often take longer to become available due to the extensive research and development that goes into the product before it is released into the market. The build quality and craftsmanship of the Q5 trailer hitch is very nice as well as the instructions for the installation are well written. After watching a Audi Certified Technician install the Q5 trailer hitch I would not recommend attempting to install it yourself. The Q5 can tow 4,400 LBS (pounds) the highest in its class by far so this is a great Audi accessory to have. Also installation time is about four hours so make sure when you drop your Q5 off at the Service Department to give them plenty of time because this is a new procedure and the professional Audi Technicians will want to make sure the installation is 100%.

Not impressed by the raw bumper edges. Doesn’t ‘look’ like a factory option should. Disappointing.

Audi should release a bumper add-on piece to cover the cut edges.

    Hi,
I am getting a 2010 Q5 soon but I want to add the trailer hitch and my dealer asked for $1600. Kind of expensive compared to the price to install a trailer hitch on a VW tiguan or Audi Q7
    Is it a good deal?

    Hi there!

Is there also a coding that needs to be done on the computer when a tow hitch is fitted? If so, is there any info on what it is?

    Regards
    Chris

    Warren,
$1,600 is not to far off I know we install it for a little lees and with no sales tax in Oregon you can do pretty well. As far as pricing however this quote is about right.

    Chris,
Yes after the tow hitch is installed coding will need to be performed so the vehicle can recognize the new accessory, this will have to be done at your local authorized Audi dealer.

Is there anyway to install the hitch without damaging the rear bumper?

  • http://www.iamaudi.com Scott Mitchell

    Ivan,
You can, however the hitch is not a factory Audi part.

I was just checking the rear bumper of my Q5 and I noticed that It actually already has the a a built in compartment-window meant for the tow-hitch. It has a couple of simple security knobs-screws which you turn to detach it.
Now that I see my Q5 have has already the space and the bumper won’t be cut, I’m more than willing to have the hitch install. I guess I’ll use it with the bike carrier accessory more than actually pulling a trailer

Hello,If you do not the install the Factory Audi Hitch does that void the warranty.Meaning if I just went for an after market unit on the Q5
    Thanks for your help

    Scott,

I recently installed Audi factory trailer hitch parts on my 2010 Q5. It seems the handling and acceleration has changed. The Q5 moved more agile and nimble before the installation of trailer hitch. Now, the car feels heavy and responds slower. Even the transmission is little jumpy. Is this normal? It seems like the settings on my Q5 has been changed. Is there any way to change the setting as it was prior to the installation?

  • http://www.iamaudi.com Scott Mitchell

    Ken,
After installing the tow hitch on the Q5 the vehicle has to be adapted to this new accessory and that may change the driving characteristics. Call your Audi Service Department and ask if they performed the adaptation after installing the tow hitch and you will have your answer.

  • http://Website ken

    Scott,

I talked to the service department and they said they performed adaptation which includes changes in coolants circulation and ESP setting. They also said that they had not changed any settings on transmission nor engine. Is it possible that the changes in ESP setting alone change the driving characteristic that much? I am wondering if they could undo the adaptation since I would not tow my boat most of time.
    Tahnk you.

Is the software update available for a DYI or must we take it to the dealer? If it’s available, any idea where? If it’s not, any idea why not?

on a 2010 factory installed towing package for the US, is there a pre-wired plug under the dash for a brake controller?

“Is the software update available for a DYI or must we take it to the dealer? If it’s available, any idea where? If it’s not, any idea why not?”

I found 4 locations to change using my VAG cable. 1 is security coded (ABS) which explains my ESP errors. This last one is required when coding your computer … I have a link to my install file on http://forums.audiworld.com/forumdisplay.php?f=129 under poncherrelly.

How much should it cost for an Audi dealer to install this hitch, with out electric. We want to use for bike rack. We live in NYC. Thanks.

  • Bob

I had my tow package installed at the factory…It has the electrical hookup. What I’d like to know…Was the wiring harness to the front driver’s side also installed and if so, where is the plug located for the brake controller? Somewhere behind the dash?

  • Bob

Is the black box the brake controller?
