2012 Audi: Setting Up WiFi Hotspot

Featured by Inside Line: There is a ton of tech in our Audi A8L — so much that we could blog about its myriad features incessantly (as we have, and will), and so much that we had forgotten to set up the WiFi network. It’s not like Audi is alone in offering an in-car WiFi router, but I love the idea of having this feature in the car, and getting it working was my first order of business. Yet, I’m not sure it’s something I’d use every day. Indeed, the Google Map data that’s part of the WiFi service is cool, but since I’m usually driving, and not sitting in the backseat with an iPad using Facebook, I’m not realizing the full benefits of the WiFi.

Where WiFi really becomes useful, in my opinion, is when you’re out on the road and need a signal strengthener for your smartphone or, more important, when you need to blog and don’t feel like carting your laptop into Starbucks. Audi has chosen T-Mobile (aka, Deutsche Telekom) as its exclusive provider, and despite that company’s so-so coverage in the U.S., it’s still far better than nothing. During the cross-country barbecue adventures of Scott and Scott, their phones were picking up the Audi’s WiFi signal, but they were unable to connect. Upon their return, we realized we had spaced and forgotten to insert the SIM card, which explains this “SIM card no good” display…

Straightening out that issue was as simple as inserting the SIM card in its designated slot under the nav screen. Here you can also see the SD card ports, which are one means of transferring music to the A8′s 20GB hard drive. Although Audi’s MMI system is probably the most straightforward and user-friendly of its kind, the WiFi password (which had already been entered and saved in the car before we got it), is a little bit hidden in the Telephone menu. Here’s the sequence of steps in photos (I shot these in the safety and comfort of the garage, so that’s why the car has no 3G service). Probably the best thing about the process is the breadcrumbing at the top of the display — you never get lost in MMI. Audi provides a free data plan for the first six months. It’s yet to be decided who will pay the bill once that trial period is up.

We follow Audi UK on Facebook and we had to share a video they recently posted on their wall about quattro, the video description is – 1980: unique in series production. Today: the standard to match. A0 Monocycle: Audi’s Urban Transportation Vehicle

“Designer creates personal vehicle made to fit in the trunk of Audi automobiles…” Designed by Angel Sanchez Vargas, the A0 Monocycle is a project sponsored from Audi’s very own design and research center in Munich. Taking design ques from Audi’s automobiles, the A0 is a compact and lightweight all-electric personal transportation vehicle that is designed to fold and fit into the trunk of any Audi automobile. Although the A0 isn’t exactly the most innovative personal vehicle out there, the design has a lot of potential when combined with Audi’s automobiles. The idea is to give drivers maximum mobility and convenience in their urban environments. Accented day lighting adds a stylistic flare to the vehicle while automatic headlights and brake lights ensure safety during the night.

So Audi is way ahead of the pack when it comes to technology, not just innovations but quality of execution. Take Audi night vision for example, other auto manufactures have tried but non have acquired their technology from the military like Audi and had this kind quality. Today we were driving the new 2012 Audi A6 with the Technology Package and night vision assist and take a look at what we saw, a pair of Audi R8′s! Without question we love to seeing R8′s, but what really impressed us was the quality of the image in the DIS (Driver Information Display). We laughed as we thought of the countless things you could capture without anyone knowing as you sat back in your night-vision equipped Audi… and yes we would love to see the pictures!

Audi 3D Head-Up Display Navigation

The source of this article is German Car Blog who says: “Using a series of 3D projectors, a large map would take up residence in the unused space on top of the dashboard. Route guidance, destination information, infotainment options and a host of other features would all be controlled via hand gestures that are sensed by the AIDA 2.0 system.”

On the Senseable City Labs Youtube Channel it says: “The AIDA project (Affective, Intelligent Driving Agent), a collaboration between Audi’s Electronics Research Lab and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (SENSEable City Lab), is a platform comprising of an intelligent navigation system that aims to bring an innovative driving experience. We envision a navigation system that becomes familiar with both the driver and the city. Instead of focusing solely on determining routes to a specified waypoint, our system utilizes analysis of driver behavior in order to identify the set of goals the driver would like to achieve. Furthermore, AIDA involves an understanding of the city beyond what can be seen through the windshield, incorporating information such as business and shopping districts, tourist and residential areas, as well as real-time event information.”

We are on site in Munich Germany for the 2012 Audi A6 launch and we have had the opportunity to experience some of Audi’s cutting edge technologies first hand. We have driven the new A6 on the streets, back roads and even the Autobahn but these exercises were done on an abandoned airfield with some very nice equipment! This video is of the new Audi A6 with Pre Sence – the basic idea of Pre Sence is it is a proactive safety system that can anticipate imminent collision and react before it happens, even before the driver can react. Audi of America say’s on their Youtube page “At a test track in Montreal, Canada, journalists were given the opportunity to test drive various Audi quattro models on an icy road course. The technology behind Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive allows for great handling in tough conditions.” This video put a big smile on my face knowing Audi took the time to invite journalists out to experience the cars in these snowy conditions proving quattro’s capabilities in any condition. The next time Audi puts an event like this on I hope to make it out and share my impressions with everyone, what an experience it would be. Happy Monday everyone and make it an awesome week!

Audi iPhone: Everything In The Palm Of Your Hand!

If you happen to take part in an auto show this year that involves Audi – you will notice something very different from everyone else. Audi has teamed up with Digital Collateral , a technology company with a very unique platform, that enables customers to have all the information of various models sent right to their cell phone or computer with the use of a scanned bar code. Audi launched this program at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit this week.
