Several hundred contacts in my iPhone were "corrupted" , had tel numbers in wrong fields, email addresses in tel fields, etc. I went through each contact on the computer and deleted the "corrupted" ones, corrected minor problems on other contacts, made sure each and every contact had the correct info in the correct field, then synced the Iphone with the computer.
